Postal codes in France have been in use since 1964 when they were introduced by La Poste following the activation of the "automatic sorting" system. The system was updated in 1972, transitioning to the current 5-digit system.
France uses a five-digit numeric postal code system where the first two digits represent the region of the city. Although the region numbers were assigned alphabetically between 1860 and 1870, subsequent changes (such as renaming and division of regions) have disrupted the full alphabetical order. The system also covers French overseas territories and includes Monaco.
The last three digits in the postal codes are used to define a more specific location and are generally reserved for the "préfecture" (prefecture number). However, in Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, the last two digits represent the arrondissement. For example, 80000 corresponds to Amiens, the préfecture of the Somme region, while 69008 corresponds to the 8th arrondissement of Lyon.
